Cheney Sweats Out the Summer

By Ray McGovern
July 14, 2009

So far the summer has been mild in the Washington, D.C., area. But for former Vice President Dick Cheney the temperature is well over 100 degrees. He is sweating profusely, and it is becoming increasingly clear why.

Ray,

Thanks for yet another sober yet entertaining view of the moral abyss in which the nation finds itself.

Where would we be if we could not appreciate the dark humor of our national hypocrisies?

Some, me too and despite the ABC connectivity of all pre-existing dots, are disappointed-to-betrayed in the face of Obama's saying sweet progressive nothings while commiting Bush-like whoppers: don't ask/don't tell on torture, sorry "State Secrets" to torture victims, military tribunals vs. trials, pre-emptive detention, take Stanley McChrystal you Afghans... to cite a few.

Others are slow to remonstrate with Obama who, don't we know, has sooooo much on his plate and, given the preeminent concern for our economic abyss, they do not call him on his pragmatic value-less code.... their ox being safe for the moment...

Perhaps a few knowingly recognize in Obama's bait and switch the One World hand of malevolent shadow governmental forces in whom insiders suggest "real" power resides.

Such power broker personages may include the folks who have brought us the CIA's inner circle from the start.

Be that as it may, and with due note given to the distinctive gulf between the analytical and its dark historical core-corps, does it not seem that our "President's secret", "lawless", "drug-funded" CIA army, said to be responsible for 6,000,000 deaths over the years and ever the antithesis of democracy, should be abolished or at least purged of its dark side players so as to allow future presidents some freedom from the temptations of using/being used by the elite class of moral psychopaths who've given the lie to our democratic pretenses for 60+ years?

Doubtless Cheney sleeps with the fitless dreams of the righteous.

While President Barry and his con artists anticipate "How can we fool 'em today?"

I argue only with the use of the word "pitiable" to describe George Tenet. "Pitiful" works better, or "self-pitiable", but he certainly is not "able to be pitied" in my own eyes. He knew it all, just as I did (or at least suspected I did) even from my armchair at home with only the pitiful media to help me try to ascertain truth in the false facts as they were foisted upon us.

It was clear to me as early as Christmas 2002, however and despite the favorable media blitz toward war, that everything was being cooked up by Bush himself (not to mention the far more aggressive Cheney) with all their minions.

Remember the famous, "It's a slam-dunk!" line from Tenet in the meeting where he showed Bush the evidence ("intel"?) they had for war and when Bush complained, "This is not good enough to convince Joe Public."

There it was. Bush was not interested in truth but was interested only in convincing Joe Stupid Public, and what Tenet had presented was not good enough even for that.

How clear did it need to be?

And remember how all the media outlets protected Bush even then? It was not the Bush remark that got all the attention, but the Tenet slam-dunk remark, as though Tenet had pulled the wool over the good president's eyes.

Such deceit.

I do hope that Holder and others, urged on by so many, will be able to move ahead. I guess it's understandable that Obama cannot just leap grandly onto this bandwagon of justice for fear of seeming like "seeking revenge" but we must keep reminding everybody that justice is justice, pure and simple, and when crimes are committed--especially the grandest international crime of all, a war of aggression, plus lying to Congress--the criminals must be brought to jusice, in a healthy democracy.

Our Justice Department was so corrupted by Bush/Cheney that it will take some time to correct, but most certainly a special prosecutor is the way, and this time one hopes that the president of the country will NOT be commuting any sentences.

Thanks, Ray McGovern, for continuing to try to get at truth here. You are indeed a fine analyst. Welcome out of the basement (remember? the Downing Street Memo first panel where you and John Conyers et al were put disgracefully in that tiny room in the Capitol basement, and the Washington Post sneered at y'all? I remember it very well and am still outraged.)
