My recollections are a bit hazy, but I have a vague recollection that prior to Lyndon Johnson, the southern Democrats had many of the offensive characteristics that we now attribute to the Republican Party.

In that bygone era, it seemed to me that outright lies and distortions were the trademark of these conservative Democrats who later found a home in the Republican Party, where they still behave in the same way.
