So Who's Afraid of the Israel Lobby?

By Ray McGovern
October 5, 2007

Virtually everyone: Republican, Democrat—Conservative, Liberal. The fear factor is non-partisan, you might say, and palpable.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee brags that it is the most influential foreign policy lobbying organization on Capitol Hill, and has demonstrated that time and again, and not only on Capitol Hill.

I never cease to be amazed at how this brazen crime has been dealt with for 40 years now.

I am reproducing this article on my own blog. I wish you well and thanks for your hard work.

The fact that even now, with the damning new revelations, this story fails to resonate in the media echo chamber pretty much establishes where its loyalties lie. Thank you for this piece Ray.

Authors who comment on this topic and speculate about the Israeli motives for the attack, always seem to overlook what to my mind seems the most probable reason. I do not believe the Israelis were worried about the USA knowing that they were about to attack the Golan or that they were committing war crimes against Egyptian prisoners, or that it had anything to do with the Israeli nuclear program. So what if the USA knew? When has the USA ever really attempted to stop Israel from doing bad things, especially since 1967? Or objected to Israeli war crimes in any meaningful way?

The secret key might lie, rather, in the Lavon Affair, another earlier incident tying the USA with Israel and Egypt. The attempt to sink the Liberty and kill all its crew might have been a gambit intended to bring the USA into the war on the Israeli side by pinning the blame for the attack on the Egyptians, ie, a false flag operation. Read up on the Lavon Affair and compare its lessons to the Liberty attack and it does seem like a possible motive for the attack, worth mentioning.

Why do so many authors not mention this possibility? Are they covering up the most damning possible Israeli motivation of all, or is it just that they are not cynical enough to think like the Israelis, and thus remain baffled by their behavior?

Sure we cannot know Israeli motivations for certain, but we can look at Israeli conduct over the long term and notice certain patterns.

The other "Israel Lobby". You know, the one that almost no one wants to talk about.
