In 1987, President Ronald Reagan nominated Robert Gates to be Director of Central Intelligence (DCI), but he was denied confirmation because a majority of members on the Senate Intelligence Committee believed he was lying about his knowledge and role in the Iran-Contra Affair.

I think Melvin A. Goodman is being rather gentle with former Sec. of State Colin Powell and former NYTimes writer Judith Miller. What does it say about Pres. Obama, that he keeps Robert Gates in his administration, the only "hold-over" in such a post from an opposition party in US history (I read somewheres at the time)? Will Pres. Obama remove Gates, who Robert Parry has called a team player, and opportunist, I think?
