It sure is disheartening to see that am the only commenter on this prescient article by the unparalleled ray McGovern...... And it's nice to see that he documents his assertions.
"Also worth noting is the conventional wisdom prevalent in our Fawning Corporate Media (FCM) that Egypt forced Israel into war in June 1967. An excellent, authoritative source has debunked that — none other than former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin! In an unguarded moment in 1982, when he was prime minister, he admitted publicly:"
“In June 1967, we had a choice. The Egyptian army concentrations in the Sinai approaches do not prove that [Egyptian President] Nasser was really about to attack us. We must be honest with ourselves. We decided to attack him.”
Kudos to Ray, he is a brave speaker of truth to POWER...and to those of us who have not done the WORK to asses the accuracy of the myths of we are fed by the FCM........Thank You Ray for Your outstanding insight and the truth you bring to us... TGW, Vineyard Haven
The Liberty's survival and SOS probably averted a nuclear attack by the US fleet on Egypt the false flag excuse for which would have been that Russian & Egyptian aircraft and torpedo boats had sunk the Liberty with the loss of all hands. The US scrambled nuclear armed ship born fighter bombers not for rescue but for reprisal which were withdrawn shortly after the Liberty's SOS identifying Israeli aircraft as the attackers was heard by US, Russian, French, UK and Turkish listening posts. There is no medal special enough to award for averting a nuclear war and there is no single incident more indicative of the travesty of morality that the US war justification apparatus has become. The story of the Liberty is the story of sloppinesss --- primarily the sloppiness of the United States.
The decision to locate the Liberty in a war zone was a stupid mistake which the US tried to remedy at the highest levels --- but the communication to leave the area failed to reach the Liberty in time due to a comedy of errors.
At the same time, US signal intelligence planes were in the air --- but they kept further away. And the latest declassified information records the Israeli confusion about the Liberty and the decision to stop the attacks.
The explanations for the Israeli attack on the Liberty have been bizarre. One is that it was to coverup a massacre at El Arish at that very time. There's no evidence of such a massacre and moreover it is stupid to believe something happening at the very time could go up and down the Israeli military so quickly.
The other explanation is that is was done to hide the Israeli intent to attach Syria. That falls apart when it is known that the US was given (at the highest levels) a very broad hint that Israel was going to attack Syria.
As for the issue of the US flag flyng --- which the Isreali's denied, I've never understood the importance of that. I'd sssume the flag was flying --- but some of the Israeli's never saw it.
And the best 'proof' that it wasn't a deliberate attack on a US vessel is that the ship wasn't sunk and the attack was stopped before the ship sank.
As to the comment about preventing a US nuclear attack --- there's no evidence for this.
For years I have written my local newspaper asking them to honor the Liberty on the anniversary of the attack. But only once was I successful. Two years ago the Florida Times Union (Jacksonville FL) wrote a somewhat tepid account being sure to hedge its bets so as not to offend those who will argue that it was just a mistake. This year I'm doing it again.
Jacksonville is a Navy town and we have lots of retirees. One would think that honoring the men of the Liberty would be a cinch to get published.
Recently there was extensive coverage of the local naval ceremony honoring the crew of the USS Stark hit by two Exocet missiles in 1985.
I asked our paper "why isn't the navy also having a ceremony honoring the USS Liberty".
We can all write letters to the editor reminding them of the courage of the men of the USS Liberty. Maybe it doesn't do much good, not even in a Navy town, but it at least reminds them that they are part of the cover up and by being part of the cover up they are just as dishonorable as the others who have failed to give the men of the Liberty the honor they deserve.
This is utter rubbish..... the truth is the ship was conveying the Israeli Order of Battle to the intel base on Cyprus, and straight on to the Egyptian High Command! THAT is why Israel hit the ship. No nation at war can have its Order of Battle given carte blanche to its enemy! McGovern is full of it.
Aside from Israel's ability to buy and/or intimidate US politicians, I can't figure out why anyone thinks "Israel is our friend." Israel is Israel's friend. I'm still waiting to hear something in the mainstream news about those happy, high-fiving Israelis who just happened to be set up to photograph the Sept. 11 attack on the twin towers. Notwithstanding Bin Laden trying to grab "credit" for the attack, there's pretty good evidence that Israel knew all about it in advance.
"And the latest declassified information records the Israeli confusion about the Liberty and the decision to stop the attacks."
So how come there's been such a cover-up in the American media? Oh well, that's a stupid question. Pro-Israeli Ashkenazi Jews control all the media in this country, including Christian broadcasting. They've done an excellent job convincing naive followers of Christ that the creation of the Israeli government in 1948 was the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. We've actually reached the point where most pastors say not supporting Israel is a sin!
I agree with at least one point in Ahmadinijad's speech at the UN: Israel is, without a doubt, the cruelest, most racist regime on the face of the earth.

I never heard of Israel stoning people to death, hanging children, oppressing women. It's a common occurence in the Islamic world.
