Surprise! Mukasey Covers Up Torture

By Robert Parry
December 15, 2007

Last month, Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer of New York and Dianne Feinstein of California joined Republicans to ensure Michael Mukasey’s confirmation as Attorney General, even though he refused to acknowledge that the simulated drowning of waterboarding was torture.

Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada helped the Bush administration, too, by rushing a floor vote on Mukasey before rank-and-file Democrats could get organized and push for a filibuster.

i know i'm probably preaching to the choir here, but i simply can't allow your characterizations of the democrats to go unchallenged...

"timid," "run up the white flag," "repeated surrenders," "failure," and "disappointed" all connote a victim response, the battered spouse syndrome, the pattern generally exhibited by those who see themselves as powerless over their destiny... i call b.s...

that diagnosis might have held some water prior to the 2006 elections, but fails miserably now, when it has become increasingly and painfully obvious that the democrats, far from being victims, are the eager and willing accomplices of a criminal presidential administration, and are only going through the motions of engaging in debate and protecting our constitution and the rule of law...

the situation is so dire (and has been since 2003) that, were the congressional democrats truly committed to upholding their oath of office, we would have seen a serious confrontation many months ago as the fight ensued to right the balance of powers, restore true accountability, and reverse the mechanisms of unfettered executive power... continuing to paint the dems as weak and spineless may make us feel better, but it's not the truth... the sooner we can accept the fact that the dems and the r's are on the same team, working for the same outcomes, the sooner we can set about hosing off the filth and encrusted excrement from the principles upon which our nation is supposedly based...

Congressional Democrats snookered? HA! I seriously doubt that! It's more like the Congressional Dems snookered fed up Americans into thinking they wanted the same changes. I've said this before and at the rate things are going I'll probably say it again - if the Dems are beholden to religion like the Repubs are we are in deeper doo-doo than I thought.
