By Brent Budowsky

When he said this, John McCain was lying. Let me spell this correctly: L-Y-I-N-G.

As I understand it, the first part of Barack Obama's grand tour overseas (Afghanistan and the Middle East) was treated as Senate fact finding business, was paid for in the ordinary manner, and included Senators Hagel and Reid as part of the entourage. The second part of the trip (Germany, France, and Great Britain) was treated as unrelated to Senate business, and was paid for by the Obama presidential campaign.

That distinction having been drawn, less than a day before Obama's scheduled visit to the Landstuhl military hospital, the powers-that-be at the Pentagon sent down the word that since the European leg of the tour was being considered partisan campaigning by all concerned, granting Obama access to the base hospital might well be considered a violation of long standing prohibitions upon electioneering on an active duty military base.

So what to do? Stick to the schedule and risk the prospect of a confrontation over access? Or back off, change the schedule, and avoid the potential hassle looming on the horizon?

There definitely was an aura suggesting a set-up-in-progress surrounding this whole flap. The earliest hard news reports about the cancelled hospital visit also mentioned that Obama's campaign security detail hadn't been cleared to accompany him at Landstuhl - a facet of this story that has completely disappeared from most reporting accounts about the incident, now that everybody is focusing instead upon the spin and outright lies being put out by the McCain camp as part of their "He don't support the troops" theme.

Three cheers for Balz's actual journalism in the WaPo, and this explanatory article dissecting the falsehoods within the GOP spin.

It's a tempest in a tea cup. And the tea cup was deliberately stirred by partisan forces within the Pentagon, all in the name of keeping our military nonpartisan.
