What Did Ahmadinejad Really Say?

By Robert Parry
September 19, 2009

It is an important principle of journalism that when someone makes a statement, especially a controversial one with grave implications, the comment should be put in the fullest possible context so the reader can make an informed judgment. But that rule doesn’t seem to apply when the New York Times writes about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejad makes a very good point about the Palestinian issue: what did the Holocaust in Germany have to do with Palestine? Iranians/Persians have standing to ask some basic moral questions: they haven't attacked another country in over 300 years; they've defended themselves, but they haven't attacked one. The Jews in Iran are the only non-Diaspora Jews on the planet. They have Jewish cemeteries with graves over 3,000 years old, and their Jewish communities are protected and welcome. (Read Roger Cohen's 2008-2009 NYT online series about the Jews of Iran for more info.) Cyrus, the great Persian king of antiquity, protected the Jews from harm; that's in their historical DNA.

All this blabbermouthing about Ahmadinejad threatening in October 2006 to 'wipe Israel off the map' was roundly denounced by Farsi scholars subsequently as wholly inaccurate; however, MEMRI's (Israeli) translation got here first and stuck, even though the NYT corrected it about 30 days later via a NYT journo's blog...of all things.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said this past week that “Iran did not pose an existential threat to Israel.” MJ Rosenberg pointed out in the Huffington Post that Barak's remark would drive AIPAC and the Israel-First Iran-haters wild. I suspect some of these same warmongering dual-loyalty cretins were behind the ban on Ahmadinejad at the Helmsley.

the aim should be to get all the truth out-there. however we all know that the men in power are convince that it is by the media that they can control the lot of us. once they finally reach the conclusion that peoples mind cannot be manipulated as they think, they will change course. but in order for that to happen a counter-media must be put in place that dismantle all this lies that the nation gets on a daily basis.
