Why Journalist Gary Webb Died

By Robert Parry
December 9, 2009

Five years ago, a tragedy occurred in American journalism: Investigative reporter Gary Webb – who had been ostracized by his own colleagues for forcing a spotlight back onto an ugly government scandal they wanted to ignore – was driven to commit suicide. But the tragedy had a deeper meaning.

Read on.

You'll excuse me but I beg to differ on our shared history.

Webb’s important historical role began in 1996 when his "Dark Alliance" investigative series for the San Jose Mercury News revived public interest in the CIA’s tolerance of cocaine trafficking by President Reagan’s beloved Nicaraguan contra rebels in the 1980s, at a time when Reagan was promoting a “just say no/zero tolerance/war on drugs.”

This is just incorrect and maybe politically correct but the truth is here:

http://www.letitbeknown.org/English/ETHNIC_CLEANSING.html

http://www.letitbeknown.org/English/THE_ORIGINS_OF_FASCISM.html

The scandal of contra cocaine trafficking and the CIA’s protection of these crimes had surfaced in the 1980s, but the Big Three newspapers – New York Times, Washington Post and Los Angeles Times – paid the scandal little heed, mostly accepting the denials of Reagan administration insiders.

You mean the CIA-memeber founded NyTimes and Washington Post? Or the sycophantic LATimes?

The Media
Journalism is a perfect cover for CIA agents. People talk freely to journalists, and few think suspiciously of a journalist aggressively searching for information. Journalists also have power, influence and clout. Not surprisingly, the CIA began a mission in the late 1940s to recruit American journalists on a wide scale, a mission it dubbed Operation MOCKINGBIRD. The agency wanted these journalists not only to relay any sensitive information they discovered, but also to write anti-communist, pro-capitalist propaganda when needed.
The instigators of MOCKINGBIRD were Frank Wisner, Allan Dulles, Richard Helms and Philip Graham. Graham was the husband of Katherine Graham, today’s publisher of the Washington Post. In fact, it was the Post’s ties to the CIA that allowed it to grow so quickly after the war, both in readership and influence. (8)
MOCKINGBIRD was extraordinarily successful. In no time, the agency had recruited at least 25 media organizations to disseminate CIA propaganda. At least 400 journalists would eventually join the CIA payroll, according to the CIA’s testimony before a stunned Church Committee in 1975. (The committee felt the true number was considerably higher.) The names of those recruited reads like a Who's Who of journalism:
Philip and Katharine Graham (Publishers, Washington Post) William Paley (President, CBS) Henry Luce (Publisher, Time and Life magazine) Arthur Hays Sulzberger (Publisher, N.Y. Times)
Jerry O'Leary (Washington Star) Hal Hendrix (Pulitzer Prize winner, Miami News) Barry Bingham Sr., (Louisville Courier-Journal) James Copley (Copley News Services) Joseph Harrison (Editor, Christian Science Monitor) C.D. Jackson (Fortune) Walter Pincus (Reporter, Washington Post) ABC NBC Associated Press United Press International Reuters Hearst Newspapers Scripps-Howard Newsweek magazine Mutual Broadcasting System Miami Herald Old Saturday Evening Post New York Herald-Tribune
Perhaps no newspaper is more important to the CIA than the Washington Post, one of the nation’s most right-wing dailies. Its location in the nation’s capitol enables the paper to maintain valuable personal contacts with leading intelligence, political and business figures. Unlike other newspapers, the Post operates its own bureaus around the world, rather than relying on AP wire services. Owner Philip Graham was a military intelligence officer in World War II, and later became close friends with CIA figures like Frank Wisner, Allen Dulles, Desmond FitzGerald and Richard Helms. He inherited the Post by marrying Katherine Graham, whose father owned it.
After Philip’s suicide in 1963, Katharine Graham took over the Post. Seduced by her husband’s world of government and espionage, she expanded her newspaper’s relationship with the CIA. In a 1988 speech before CIA officials at Langley, Virginia, she stated:
We live in a dirty and dangerous world. There are some things that the general public does not need to know and shouldn’t. I believe democracy flourishes when the government can take legitimate steps to keep its secrets and when the press can decide whether to print what it knows.
This quote has since become a classic among CIA critics for its belittlement of democracy and its admission that there is a political agenda behind the Post’s headlines.

Thank for this article on Gary. He was just about a month younger than myself. To me he was a true American Hero. He spoke truth to power. But in our modern America we can see where that leads. His courage was remarkable. God rest you Gary.

Sorry, but I just don't buy it--the part about Webb's so-called suicide--and in particular his shooting himself twice with a .38 caliber revolver.
In the ear, no less. Nonsense.
One shot, perhaps. But two? With a .38 cal. revolver to the ear? I've shot a number of them and I'm sorry, but I believe that it never happened as described. The first shot was off probably because he jerked away from being shot, or feeling the increasing pressure someone else was forcing through his finger on the trigger. The second was to finish him off. I've seen the results of gunshots to the head, and unless a glancing shot that momentarily stuns, one that entered the ear would make any person incapable of a second shot. He was 'suicided'--I have no doubt.
That is my only complaint about the article--the perpetuation of the myth of suicide.
As far as hand-written notes are concerned, threats against other family members can keep people complaint, if not even willing to help, and with no proof and no drugs or signs of imposed violence, nobody knows the difference.
Last but not least--who benefits? Pretty much the only entity not benefiting from his death--other than family, friends and the not-connected-at-all, was Gary.
Other than that, the article was excellent, very informing, and connected for me at least, many previously unconnected dots.
Thank you for having written it.
Regards,,,locoto

Thank you, Robert, for all your work and dedication. I have some, not all of your books. I've been pushing backward in time to try to pin down the beginning of this secret government that is loyal to no country and no law; am beginning to think it must have been when the immigrants Bush and Harriman set foot in America.

Thank you for remembering Gary Webb, and for being and remaining his staunch friend through the roughest of his days.

I'm sure you have sound basis for believing the suicide story; frankly I have doubts. I've read too many stories of the CIA's expertise at "suiciding" those who make waves for them. Bottom line, they value nothing but money and power.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Locojhon, Webb was suicided. I find it very hard to believe anyone could shoot themselves twice in the head.

A couple of months after Webb committed suicide, Hunter S. Thompson also committed suicide under mysterious circumstances.

And there's always Danny Casolaro, which nobody believes was suicide anymore.

Mr. Parry, I have a suspicion that your own discouragement with the perceived lack of success the Consortium News has been having lately may have prompted, even if only subconsciously, your thoughts to drift to Webb. Webb was a fearless reporter of unbending principle and yet was a professional failure. Perhaps you're identifying somewhat or wondering if you're heading in that direction. I'd just point out that Consortium news does have a faithful readership and many people are intensely grateful for the work you've done. Progressive sites around the web regularly link to your articles. These are perhaps the toughest economic times for anyone in decades and so much of the difficulties your site is going through have nothing to do with it's worth. It's just dumb luck. But I'll have you know this. I took you up on your offer to donate $29 and get your books earlier this year and I'm a grad student surviving off student loans. As of now I've just borrowed the money my parents were going to loan me to pay Phd. application fees to buy groceries instead. My point is that 1) I believed in you enough to spend that money knowing I'd be strapped later and again it's tough for everyone and it's no reflection on you. If you hold on through the next year I'd be willing to bet things will improve somewhat (even though I doubt the economy will). One suggestion I do have though is that you try to cut some deals with other progressive news sites around the web for your mutual benefit. There are too many progressive sites all asking for donations right now. Finding some way to make things work for your mutual benefit would be ideal.

There is another apparently unknown story from the 1990's involving CIA backed cocaine smuggling through Dominicans in the northeast. It involves the CIA and a US Attorney named Michael Stiles.

The City Paper in Philadelphia reported this in depth and you can still read it.

CIA Dominican Connection Part I

CIA Dominican Connection Part II

Four Pennsylvania Bureau of Narcotics agents lost their jobs and careers in law enforcement because they would not look the other way on the CIA's orders.

Israel is Lieberman's spiritual touchstone; all his legislative posturings re the health care bill that appear incoherent, are made clear when Israel is brought into the picture. Weakening Obama, or wanting to lesson Obama's moral pressure over Israel's settlements crimes is the goal. I say let the senate vote go with the public option, and reveal for posterity, the treasonous skunk representing not Connecticut but Israel.

i agree with those who doubt webb's suicide.....he was murdered by the cia or by friends of the cia....it also killed bill colby...

although there is no doubt that the agency operated a huge cocaine business in the usa to fund the contras there is a fertile field offering bushels of information about mena, barry seal, and bill clinton. clinton did not get the presidency because he was a great public servant. the bush crime syndicate rewarded him for service in the cause....

which leads me to the reagan presidency....reagan had plenty of faults and policy errors but his administration was one of dr jekyll and mr hyde....daddy bush was running iran contra straight out of the white house and probably without reagan's consent....in fact bush was the one behind the assassination attempt of reagan in march 1981...

the bush cia also murdered john lennon through an mk-ultra victim....

in short the bush crime syndicate in conjunction with the plutocrats of wall street have ruled america with an iron fist since bush first became president in 1980....
