Divide and be conquered is the motto of conservative religious ideologies. Religion is a cohesive force based on herd instinct and driven by fear of predators. This works well for fish, birds, and insects who remain in a swarm by being alert to danger transmitted from immediate neighbors. Some will die that the species may survive. When man evolved a new brain which could reason, this instinct, like sex, became the source of belief and cultural behavior. It is expressed in the accepted martyrdom of some members and the blind obedience to the group.
None of this prepares man for the next step, using the power of reason to make the madness of crowds, the illusions of xenophobia, this imagined reality to the survival of all mankind in the real world.
