Thank you for articulating something that's been troubling me. I watched the last portion of the Boston concert and fireworks with a sinking heart. Not just patriotism, but militarism; an equation of patriotism with willingness to enter combat. I'd been struggling to be positive about the holiday as a celebration of the Declaration of Independence, and by extension a celebration of principles. Very little of that; a lot of implication that a soldier's bravery can be taken as proof of the goodness of the military goal he serves.
