Democrats Legalize Bush's Crimes

By Robert Parry
June 20, 2008

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claims that a key positive feature of the new wiretap “compromise” is that the bill reaffirms that the President must follow the law, even though the same bill virtually assures that no one will be held accountable for George W. Bush's violation of the earlier spying law.

In other words, in the guise of rejecting Bush’s theories of an all-powerful presidency that is above the law, the Democratic leadership cleared the way for the President and his collaborators to evade punishment for defying the law.

Interesting that Bush anticipated that requesting the cooperation of the telecommunications companies would come under later scrutiny. I find the fact that he is both saying that the wiretaps were legal while simultaneously demanding retroactive immunity pretty telling.

So, Mr. Parry...where's the reporting that Obama supports this bill?

Mr. Change We Can Believe In has rolled over for the Dem power brokers.

I suggest you prepare an article pointing out Obama's willingness to adopt Richard Nixon's POV -- "if the president says it's legal, then it's legal."

Now, all the next president has to do is "write a note" giving permission to break the law, then it's legal.

This FISA amendment essentially gives unilateral powers to the Executive Branch.

This is the reality of Obama's "thinking" on FISA and how it would work:

What the "compromise" basically does is if G. Gordon Liddy had a directive (note) from Richard Nixon saying that tapping the Democratic Nat'l Committee offices was legal, then Liddy would be immune from prosecution.

"If the president says it's legal, then it's legal..."

Obama is a ruthless, whatever it takes, hack politican with a good speechifying voice.

What a fraud!

Mr. Parry, Wow- Obama isn't even waiting to be elected before he starts protecting the Bush family from its latest round of Constitution shredding. Now is that "Change You Can Believe In?" Wasn't that an unpardonable crime for the Clintons?

Obama's statement of his support of the bill seems to be MIA from Consortium as well as most of the Obama Internet websites of supporters. Some change!!!!

Well, it's a new week.

I can't wait to see Mr. Parry's admonition of Obama capitulating (slithering to the right) on FISA for political expediency.

Will I have to wait 'til hell freezes over?

We need good journalism.
