By Robert Parry
January 12, 2011

It didn’t take long after the Tucson massacre for the American Right to retreat to its favorite default position: victimhood.

Read on.

I remember Sarah Palin being hung in effigy, Jesse Jackson saying he'd like to cut Obama's balls off, some so-called female comic saying she'd like to see Palin raped by some of her big black male friends...and Hillary was called a whore and a lot worse by Obama-lovers. Mr. Parry...did you raise your voice and complain?

Bring back civility in all of our media. In 1929 the Congress passed the Radio Act which was formalized into the Fairness Doctrine in 1949 and guided our media until 1988 when Pres. Reagan's FCC Chair had the Fairness Doctrine removed. Let's have a campaign to bring it back. It required that all media present both sides of issues that are important to the public and the education of the public.

Palin is dangerous. She is representative of a segment of our population that responds as believers to any presumed threat to their communal identity. This has been going on throughout history. It is the cause of internecine wars and genocide between religions, races and cultures defending their ideologies against those believed to be less human or less deserving than themselves.
Palin exhibits the ignorance and narrow mindedness necessary for such behavior.
The media "should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the hatred and violence that they purport to condemn."
Let me remind you what blood libel is. It is the claim that the Jews killed Jesus Christ. It was invented by the early Catholic Church to deny the Jewish heritage of Christ when it became profitable to spread the church among the non-Jewish populations of the Roman empire.
It became the rallying cry for every bigoted autocrat from the popes to Luther to Hitler. It is spoken as a fact in every Christian household the way negroes were spoken of as less than human in the American south.
Hate is the uninhibited form of anger encouraged by the social acceptance of violence in support of a belief. Ask the Shiites what they thing of their Sunni coreligionists. Ask why the same proportion of Americans hate Obama. Ask why the German People were so amenable to pogroms and concentration camps, why the Catholics supported the inquisition for 500 years, why Communism killed 20 million Russians to preserve its power.
Palin uses "blood libel" without knowing what it has meant in the religious history of the world. If she used this phrase in public today as she uses it on the internet it could not be forgiven, even as an act of ignorance.

Indeed we need a vigorous and spirited debate where every party in the political spectrum can put forward its ideological principles without fear of being retaliated or targeted in any sort of violent manner. Unfortunately we don't live in that world, but one where uncivilized factionalism is the norm.

I am not in any way on the side of Ms. Palin, but I would like to see the record include the fact that Hillary Clinton attempted to smear Barack Obama with the same Bill Ayers connection during the primaries. Unforgivable for - and to - someone of her generation and sensibilities. Just as she tried to explain away her summer internship with radical lawyer Robert Truehaft.

I have to disagree about the Truthers, Bob, even though I agree that they've produced no real evidence.

The investigation the President commissioned was late, incomplete, and manipulated by the White House. He and Cheney wouldn't even testify under oath. If people don't believe the Commission's conclusions, I can't blame them. After Pearl Harbor, we had five investigations, and they were real, no-holds-barred probes.

I don't subscribe to 911 Truth theories. But I refuse to beat up on people who do. They are well meaning. They're trying to do what the government failed to do.

How typical the first anonymous comment is of right-wingers desperate to claim that they are just polite as pie, always have been, cap-in-hand-ma'am, God-lovin' humble... well, you get the idea.

Take an off-mic comment by a preacher, a statement by a comedian, and heaven knows who saying nasty things about Hillary, and presto! The left is just as nasty as the right. Rush Limbaugh saying "We won't kill all the liberals. We'll leave a couple alive in zoos so that people will know what they were like"-- why, that was just high spirited fun! Eight years of Clinton bashing by Senator Al D'Amato and Congressman Dan Burton, the editors of the WSJ and Jerry Falwell calling him a murderer and a drug dealer? All water under the bridge.

It's not the ideology of the right that's so awful. It's that they're such shameless liars.

Just two things, Mr. Parry. 1)have you noticed that even after the Tuscon Tragedy, and still maintaining that violent rhetoric cannot be blamed for violent action, that these same people have now stepped up their security? Are they afraid some left-wing, limp-wristed girlieman is gonna get ideas? And 2) do you think someday you might get around to actually watching the recordings of the three WTC's collapsing??

The Ds need a nutcase like Palin to mobilize their disillusioned ranks, who have been lied to, betrayed and hoodwinked.

The more the so-called progressive community freaks out about her the better - it scares the so-called left into line. This is exactly why liberal pundits can't stop talking and frothing about her.

She is clearly a puppet airhead who deserves no attention (like a spoiled child). By fawning over her with non-stop attention the media keeps her appearing viable and credible.

This is how we are manipulated into voting for the other right-wing corporate party - the Ds - because the only alternative in our two-party sham is another kleptocratic oligarch with more sophisticated rhetoric.

Meanwhile, the country continues to suffer social and economic decay and collapse.

The superficial and phony nature of our political discourse is dictated by the Corporate Media Oligopoly. It is a pity that so many so-called progressives will not challenge this.

I am very disappointed that Robert Parry dismisses "truthers". I have not seen "Loose Change" but read many scholarly articles and books, and the "commission" finally set up was given a narrow base, and the report was redacted. There is no way steelframed buildings can fall directly down-it has never happened before or since the three buildings on 9/11. So much evidence has been published. You must have gone out of your way to avoid it. I had no expectation of believing the material, but it is much too important to discard.

While not necessarily claiming an inside job regarding 911, surely by looking at the evidence and the physics of the collapses, one can see that there remains many, many unanswered questions. The "truthers" are fulfilling an important role in questioning the official story.

Only the elimination of all conservative Christians will allow all Americans to be free and the world to no longer have to live in fear of the U.S.A.'s imperialist, terrorist holy war. The conservative ideology has never helped mankind in any way, it has not only never helped mankind in anyway, it has oppressed, murdered, raped and killed all those in it's way to gain power. History shows us this. Fact shows us this. James Madison, the "Father of the U.S. Constitution", along with many founders of this country, regardless of their religious or non-religious affiliations, knew keeping politics and religion separate not only preserves each, but helps them flourish: "The number, the industry, and the morality of the Priesthood and the devotion of the people have been manifestly increased by the total separation of the Church and the State.

It is not mere irony that the original thesis of this article is captured by the first response to it, just two hours after it being posted; or that its anonymous author cites the likes of Michelle Malkin, herself an unapologetic harbinger of partisan hate and serial dissembling.
While there can be little doubt that Palin, or Malkin, are not representative of that which we hope our progeny will aspire to, sadly they are not an uncommon result. The hypocritical penchant for claiming victim-hood, however, is not the sole domain of any political persuasion; but more the universal practice of those who choose to avoid accountability for that which they say and do by ascribing their actions to magical divine interventions and inspirations.
This assault on reason has no political or ideological boundaries in our present social order, nor did it on the occasion of the founding of our union as a society based on equality and liberty for all its members. There have always been those who "believe" that such progressive reasoning is antithetical to their dogmatic certainty in being spiritually superior to all those who hold different beliefs.
If we as a society continue to transform much of our own progeny into confused and hapless zealots and jingoistic extremists, we have no one but ourselves to hold accountable, as a society, when such societal behavior comes back to haunt us in the form of the horror and senseless violence that is sure to result.

Gee, I am really disappointed to see a completely misguided attack against 9/11 "truthers" here. I am very disappointed that Parry has closed his mind here, and not investigated the evidence. Check out Architects and Engineers for 9/11 truth, see the presentation, then explain to yourself how any steel-framed building could fall straight down at or near free-fall speed after any fire or damage other than controlled demolition.
Indeed, 9/11 is used equally by the left and the right in false narratives. To the right, it's those Muslim terrorists that we need to wipe out in Afghanistan and Iraq. To the left, it's just an example of blowback. It couldn't have anything to do with Israel and the neocons, the New Pearl Harbor that the PNAC document said was needed to further their goals. No, nothing to do with that. Then again, there's Niels Harrit's peer reviewed paper on the nano-thermite residue discovered at ground zero.
Bob, please open your eyes. You are now just as blind as those who wouldn't see the truths you have revealed.
Simple physics is enough to prove the buildings couldn't have fallen as we saw them from the causes we are supposed to believe. Stop dissing 9/11 "truthers" please. Otherwise you have become just another "left gatekeeper", and that is sad.

Davidson,
You are truly worse than Chomsky by dragging Israel into the Sarah Palin cesspool. Her use of "blood libel" is a phrase that caused the deaths of many Jews throughout history. Go to hell....
