Of all the countries lining up to get under the United States’ protective shield in the NATO alliance, the Ukraine is the most important for the United States and Russia.
This may seem like a minor issue, but I just wanted to point out that there is no article necessary in front of "Ukraine."
Calling the country "the Ukraine" is a holdover from the Soviet days, when the country was a region of the USSR, and is considered somewhat offensive to Ukrainians.
Anyway, the preferred nomenclature is simply "Ukraine."
