We Americans are observing the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, North and South.

Thanks for this thoughtful article. In her study of the war, "The Republic of Sufffering" Drew Faust makes (among many others) a good point that one cause of the staggeringly high casualty rates is that many young men of that era took their Christian faith literally, and selflessly, and placed themselves in harm's way because their conscience was that it was better to literally die for their country "on the field of honor" than to commit the sin of killing another man. We often assume that people who came before us saw life pretty much as we do, but the differences such as this can be simply amazing. You can't help but admire them, even those who fought for one of the worst causes men ever thought up.
