The Christian Right Needs 'Enemies'

By the Rev. Howard Bess

At the heart of American Christian Fundamentalism is a basic religious dualism that is obsessed with a never-ending struggle between Good and Evil. These Christian fundamentalists must always have an “enemy” with whom to fight.

Dear Sir,

I agree with you whole-heartedly. For, I too, am gay, and I have been keeping track of what I now call the "Christian Taliban".

It saddens me that the fundamentalist branches of our beautiful religion have been compromised with fear, bigotry, and hatred. They seem to have forgotten the basic commands of our Lord Jesus the Christ. There indeed are some that are so zealous in their power, that I oftimes question as to whether or not they strive to replace God Almighty with themselves.

Please continue to fight the good fight.

Sincerely, Bernie Keefe

I think the failure of Christianity is that the basic message, "love one another", is too much to ask of humans. We're not that loving, and we confuse love with lust and so forth.
We are, on the other hand, very good at hating.
And of course we all are subjects of governments which manipulate these hatreds to their own advantage, demonizing others to allow their war profits to continue ad perpetuam...

It is not only the socalled Christians who need an enemy- it seems to be the whole USA. They also need a very unreliable friend who leads them into many scrapes- it is called Israel, and it is not for any religious reasons.

I am reading Dorothea Lange's life, and she observes the vilification of "Japanese, Chinese, Mexicans, Hindus(!) in the 1930's in California.
Any enemy will do.
